- Gehört zur Untergattung Ephippiochthonius. Viele Funde dieser Art (vormals unter dem Namen Chthonius austriacus) gehören zu C. boldorii. Das vormals weiter gefasste Taxon C. austriacus war in der Roten Liste 1998 (Drogla & Blick 1998) in Kategorie R eingestuft.
