- Taxon aus der Peronospora trifoliorum-Gruppe; nach García-Blázquez et al. (2008) zerfällt P. trifoliorum in der Fassung von Klenke & Scholler (2015) in drei bis vier nicht näher miteinander verwandte Sippen sowie weitere Befälle, für die bisher keine nähere Zuordnung möglich ist. Demnach bilden die Befälle an Trifolium medium eine genetisch eigenständige Sippe. Diese Klee-Art wird allgemein als Typuswirt von P. trifoliorum de Bary angesehen (vgl. Constantinescu 1991). Demgemäß bleibt der Name P. trifoliorum de Bary auf den Befall an diesem Wirt beschränkt, wenn die Sippe als eigenständige Art im engeren Sinne gefasst wird. In der taxonomischen und landwirtschaftlichen Literatur wird der Name z.T. in einem wesentlich umfassenderen Sinn verwendet und dient zur Bezeichnung von Peronospora-Befällen auf vielen Fabaceae.
