- N. cristatus ist pantropisch verbreitet und kann in den gemäßigten Klimazonen synanthrop in Gewächshäusern auftreten (Schmalfuss 2003). Neben älteren Beschreibungen liegt ein neuerer Nachweis aus einem Gewächshaus des Botanischen Gartens in Halle (Saale) aus dem Jahr 1998 vor (Haferkorn 1999).
