- Die Art wurde lange Zeit nicht von der Schwesterart Agrilinus ater (De Geer, 1744) getrennt und ihr Artstatus erst von Pittino & Mariani (1993) wiederhergestellt. In der älteren Literatur wird das Taxon oft angegeben als Aphodius ater var. convexus (Erichson, 1848).

- Further comments
- In Mittel- und Süddeutschland meist häufiger als Agrilinus ater und hier bis in höhere Lagen vorkommend, in den Alpen bis in 1.900 m, in Mitteleuropa im Gegensatz zu A. ater eine Art der kollinen bis hochmontanen Höhenstufen (Rößner 2020); fehlt im Flachland mit atlantisch getöntem Klima (Rößner 2012); aktuelle Vorkommen bisher bestätigt für Bayern, Baden-Württemberg, Pfalz, Raum Hannover, Sachsen-Anhalt, Thüringen und Sachsen.
