- P. ferrugineum besiedelt vorzugsweise nährstoffarme Biotope, wie Trockenrasen und Moore, aber auch Überschwemmungsgebiete. In anderen Biotopen wird die Art vermutlich durch andere Erdläufer verdrängt. Daher ist sie durch Meliorationsmaßnahmen bedroht.
